After the O-16 and O-18 tanks proved to be a major success within the Yugoslav army, in mid 1943, they started developing a new, more modernized tank, that being the Object-40-85 (85 standing for the MM on the gun)

In July of 1943, the licence and blueprint of the O-40-85 was sold to the Ikarus company, which was a provider for the Chamont Union.

In January of 1944, the O-40-85 license and blueprint was sold to the URSR.

Variants

  • O-40: A prototype version, no cannon, only chassis demonstration.
    • O-40-75: The O-40, but equipped with the same gun as the O-18. There were many compatibility issues and this idea was soon scrapped.
    • O-40-85: After redesigning a turret, engineers finally settled on a new turret with an 85mm cannon installed.
      • T-40-85: Redesignated from "Objekt" to "Type".
        • T-40-85B: Identical to the T-40-85, however it has added Slat Armour, as well as external storage.
          • T-40-85D: Taken the idea of the "B" variant, but just added more armour around the tank itself, increased protection against stuff such as HE rounds.
            • T-40-85E: Added rubber skirts to prevent mud from flying around and potentially clogging or getting in the way.
              • T-40-85F: Replaced the normal steel tracks with rubber tracks, this variant is mainly used for Parades and / or urban warfare.
